Vancouver historic walk: a 2-hour self-guided route through Gastown and the waterfront
A sample itinerary along the harbour and through the oldest part of the city — about 2.5 km with one modest hill, roughly two hours including stop time. Every place is in our stop library, so the app can rebuild this route from wherever you're standing.
6 stops · about 120 minutes including time at each one · walking pace.
- 1
Canada Place
Spend about 15 min
Start on the promenade under the five sails. Look north across Burrard Inlet to the mountains and the North Shore — the whole geography of the city in one view.
- 2
Marine Building
Spend about 15 min
Walk two blocks to the 1930 art deco tower. Step into the lobby: terracotta sea life around the entrance, brass elevator doors, inlaid floor.
- 3
Vancouver Lookout (Harbour Centre)
Spend about 20 min
Optional but worth it early — 360 degrees over the peninsula so the rest of the walk makes sense from ground level.
- 4
Gastown Historic District (Steam Clock)
Spend about 25 min
Cobblestones, cast-iron lamps and the 1880s warehouse blocks that survived the fire era. Time your arrival on the quarter hour for the steam whistle.
- 5
Vancouver Art Gallery
Spend about 25 min
The 1906 provincial courthouse by Francis Rattenbury, now the gallery. The north plaza steps are the city's default public square.
- 6
English Bay Beach
Spend about 20 min
Walk out Davie to the water to finish. Inukshuk, the bay, and the best sunset line in the city.
Doing it with the app
The planner reorders these stops around wherever you're standing, gives you live directions between them, and shows the history and photos when you arrive. First three stops are free; the $2 day pass unlocks the rest for 48 hours. Store code from a local shop? The whole tour is on them.
